Head of Royal Navy (RN) Media and Communication

Head of Royal Navy (RN) Media and Communications is the principal communications advisor to First Sea Lord and the Navy Board on RN media, communications and engagement issues. Directly accountable to the First Sea Lord (4* – Permanent Secretary equivalent), as well as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy) (2* – Director level equivalent), and leading a team of approximately 70 civilian and military staff.
The post holder’s primary role is to:
• Lead the full range of Royal Navy media and communications, brand and reputational activity.
• Manage all aspects of the First Sea Lord’s communication and engagement activity.
• Own and deliver the RN external and internal communication strategies.
Specific responsibilities / activities include:
• Managing the high level communications aspects of RN incident and crisis management.
• Representing the Royal Navy within the Ministry of Defence and with key stakeholders both internal to government and from external organisations.
• Leading and orchestrating the overall approach to RN reputation, strategic positioning and profile efforts, internally and externally, in support of the Navy Board (NAVB) and Directorate of Defence Communications (DDC).
• Leading and orchestrating the overall approach to internal messaging in support of personnel engagement and retention.
• Single point of accountability for all aspects of RN communications activity, including attending and advising the NAVB and Navy Command Board on communication matters, and providing advice and guidance on the presentational aspects of RN business to the 2* / Director-led business areas.
• Generating opportunities, and delivering against the RN Strategic Communications Strategy, including managing the means of communication delivery.
• Managing, analysing and articulating communication threats to RN reputation, and advising on appropriate communications activity and responses.
• Managing a proactive and effective stakeholder management programme for the RN.
• Professional head of the media operations branch.
The ideal candidate will need to demonstrate their capability and potential against the following criteria:
• Experience of senior leadership and Media, Communications and Engagement strategy development and delivery in a complex organisation.
• Strong understanding of the Armed Forces.
• Have the knowledge and credibility to regularly and comfortably brief up to 4* / Perm Sec / CEO level and be able to represent each of the sub-Divisions as required making decisions on management and policy.
• Proven senior leadership experience in leading presentational aspects of high profile, real time incidents and managing crisis situations.
• An understanding of the senior structures, organisations and mechanisms delivering the strategic communications of Defence, and their interrelationships with the Naval Service and Navy Command Headquarters.
• Commercial marketing and communications experience gained in agencies or in-house.
• A strong understanding and instinctive advocacy of the Naval Service would be advantageous.
