Who’s using what for internal social media?

Over the years I’ve highlighted various examples of how companies are using enterprise social networks, collaborative tools and social media for internal communication.

It’s a question I get asked constantly – who’s doing what, who’s using Chatter/Yammer and what can I learn from them? Where can I find examples, articles and case studies of enterprise social networks and how organisations are using them for internal and external communication or customer service?

Stop looking – you’re in the right place!

The List
This article was first created in June 2013 and I’ve updated it multiple times since then.

My aim is for this list to be the definitive place where internal communication professionals can get a glimpse into who is using what. I’ve included various tools and technologies, articles, interviews, videos and case studies from websites.

There are many more I could include and I will continually add to it. There are 400 examples below – fill your boots!

2016 update: This list now includes Facebook at Work (Workplace).

Each section has a video to give you a glimpse into what the platform is, to help you visualise what the various options are. Most of them have been produced by the providers and I’ve included ones I’ve written into the mix.

Now I need your help – in order for ‘The List’ to be as useful as possible to us all, I’m not setting it in stone. It’s very much an active collation of examples and I’d love to you to add to it. So if you’ve seen another example you think would be useful to share, do please let me know.

You’re welcome to Tweet me @AllthingsIC, comment below or send me a note via the contact form, linking to an example you think could be added. Thank you to everyone who has got in touch to date.

I have listed them in alphabetical order and you can also see all the overview videos via my YouTube playlist.

Let’s make this list as useful as it can be for IC pros. Spotted a broken link? Do please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Rachel

P.s. Want to read examples of social media policies? I recently published a list of 300+ including 26 videos via my blog.

  1. nienke says:

I’m interested in organisations that use Sharepoint 2013 as technic for their platform. Do you have cases for this?

  2. I’ll certainly see what I can find, thank you for the suggestion, Rachel

  3. Tomi says:

Great list, thanks for sharing this. Here is a good site (in German) with more case studies: http://www.e20cases.org/

  4. Thanks very much Tomi, I’ll check them out, Rachel

  5. Jakkii Musgrave says:

This is great, thanks for compiling these. Would love to see http://socialtext.com included as we further explore ST for our organisation.

  6. Fantastic list. Really helpful to have this info and context in one place.

  7. […] Great List by Rachel Miller grouped by solution providers. […]

  8. Bert Vries says:

Great list, Rachel. Do you know any examples of corporates who are using google+ as their Enterprise Social Network platform?

  9. Hi Bert, thank you. Not that I’ve found, but if there are any case studies around I’d be happy to add them to my list, Rachel

  10. Do you use Podio? I’ve not heard of it before, Rachel

  11. Yasmin Ocansey says:

    Hi Rachel,
That was a great list. Do you happen to know anyone who uses Ning?

  12. Troels says:

    Hi there.

What about Sitecore sites. I have worked on a really cool Sitecore Social media intranet i a municipality in Denmark and would recommend it for others looking for a integrated intranet/social media solution.

  13. […] use of enterprise social networks is on the rise – I’ve got a growing list of platforms already, ranging from Azendoo and Jive to Yammer and Zyncro. I expect to add to that list in 2014 […]

  14. Rachel,

Awesome list! Would it be possible to add Company HubSite (http://companyhubsite.com). It’s a relatively new product, but worth looking into.

  15. Thanks for the suggestion Jason, I’ll take a look, Rachel

  16. Sebastien Caron says:

You can add CGI (www.cgi.com) for the Tibbr platform ( see this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awSlZSy13Rw ).

  17. Thanks Sebastien, I’ve added CGI to the list, Rachel

  18. […] communications specialist Rachel Miller at All Things IC offers an incredibly comprehensive list, cataloguing 25 platforms and some 400 case studies, that begs for perusal. There are videos […]

  19. Richard Bryant says:

Hi Rachel, are there any free providers out there? I am using IBM Connections at work and would like to use something similar for our school governing body, but without the expense of course! Key feature would be a sub community where we can keep restricted info for each of the sub committee’s within the governing body. Thanks

  20. Hi Richard, a couple are. Yammer operate a “freemium model” for instance – you can sign up and then choose later to upgrade and buy enterprise licences. Alternatively you could use Google plus and create a closed network which then has sub-groups. That’s free and from what you’ve said, would work well for your requirements. Good luck.

  21. George Cook says:

Thanks for compiling this great list! I would like to add Proofhub. It’s a multipurpose tool for all platforms. Have a look at http://www.proofhub.com

  22. Danyal Kadi says:

Hey do you have anything on cisco mediasense?

  23. Hi Danyal no not seen that, do you have more info you can share?

  24. Marie Ellis says:

    Hi Rachel

Great list! Thank you so much. Was wondering if you had any information on Paraxel’s internal communications tools? They won an award earlier this year for their internal communications. Here’s a link about that: http://www.parexel.com/company/news-events/press-releases/2014/parexel-wins-2014-iabc-gold-quill-merit-award-internal-communications

  25. Bernie says:

    Rachel,
You might want to add Igloo, who offer a really user-friendly, intuitive and cloud-based intranet platform. I saw Hulu present on theirs and it looked great (and was set up in 6 weeks!) and I know others that are also pretty happy with the product. (FYI – I’m not saying that just because the Igloo folks are fellow Canadians 🙂 Check out their website at: https://www.igloosoftware.com/. Cheers.

  26. David Attard says:

    Hi Rachel,

one thing most of these collaboration tools have is that they are quite generic. It’s like you have to mould yourself around you.

BeeWits, is a project / task management for creatives, web designers and freelancers which is specifically written for these personas. For example, our task templates allow you to get started with projects in a few minutes.

You can also give your clients access to any tasks you want to show them.

Would love it if you could give BeeWits a spin and let me know what you think about it.

    Cheers
    David

  27. Eyal says:

Would love it if you could include Connecteam. With Connecteam you can automate your business’s internal comms and workflows as part of a fully branded mobile app

  28. Coleton says:

    Great list Rachel!

ThoughtFarmer would be another great social intranet tool worth adding to the list.

ThoughtFarmer is an intuitive, easy to use collaboration platform (for all technical skill levels) for companies looking to bring teams closer together and streamline projects across divisional boundaries.

I’ve link the website here: https://www.thoughtfarmer.com/

  29. Miho Shoji says:

Thanks for this list, Rachel. Great job compiling all this information… BUT I have a question: Are all of this platforms JUST for collaboration and team-work? They are not exactly for INTERNAL Comms… of employees comms, are they?

  30. Hi this list has evolved over the years. Most are IC.

  31. Emiko says:

Hi Rachel, this list is so helpful. Thank you! I am wondering if you know any user cases with SAP Jam (part of SAP’s SuccessFactor) ?

  32. Hi Emiko, good to hear you’re finding it useful. No, not that I’m aware, some of the vendors may directly.

  33. […] Rachel Miller at allthingsIC has put together a great list of over 400 enterprise social network case studies. Check it out here: http://www.allthingsic.com/list/ […]

  34. Lisa says:

I find this list very informative. Are you planning to update it for 2018 or 2019 again?

  35. Hi Lisa, I update it occasionally. If there’s something missing, let me know.
