The echo of conversations

It’s been a week since the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Internal Communications conference in London, but the conversations are still happening. My Twitter feed and email have been full of internal comms pros getting in touch to share their thoughts on what they heard and discussed, and it’s great to hear the impact of the conference. Congratulations to the CIPR Inside and CIPR teams who worked their socks off to make it happen. I enjoyed the presentations and networking opportunities but as always, time whizzed by too quickly.

Keynote speaker Max McKeown said one of my favourite quotes from the day: “You’ll never find the right idea if you never let go of the wrong idea” – which I think is extremely applicable for internal comms. Speakers we also heard from included Jenni Wheller, Klavs Valskov, Spencer Fox, Ralph Cochrane, David MacLeod and Nita Clarke and Mike Grafham.

Two internal communications professionals sent me messages to tell me how they had done things differently the next day at work as a result of things I said in my talk and I’m delighted that something resonated and led to action. I see the value in attending events and conferences, as even if you leave with a nugget of information which you can then work on to make your own, it is money well spent.

However I know there isn’t always the budget to attend such events, and regular readers will know I highlight what’s coming up that I hear of, particularly if it’s a freebie!

If you are attending an event that you think other comms pros could learn from, do please get in touch to volunteer to write a guest article.

Last week The IC Crowd launched a comms calendar and this will be kept updated as and when Jenni, Dana and I hear of events. So do tweet us @theICcrowd if you think there’s something that other internal comms pros would benefit from knowing about.

During the CIPR Inside conference, Creative Connection produced a mural to capture the day in their own unique way and you can see that on this page. It will open larger when you select it. If you missed the event, I’ve created a Storify so you can get a flavour of the day and see some of the videos, slides and images.

You can also read reports of the event via Kim Roberts, Kevin Ruck, Belinda Gannaway and Gloria Lombardi or see the live-blog and YouTube channel.

I hear there’s an exciting project from the CIPR Inside committee that is going to be unveiled shortly. My lips are sealed for now, but look out for more info via @CIPRInside coming soon.

You can read my Storify of the event below and follow the ongoing conversations on Twitter via #CIPRInside. What did you take away from the event? You’re welcome to comment below or tweet me @allthingsIC.
