How to be a Comms Consultant

What is your career situation right now?

Perhaps you’re in-house and enjoying your role, or you’ve been furloughed and are waiting to hear what your next steps will be.

Maybe you’re searching for a new job, have been made redundant or don’t know what to do next.

If you are thinking about your next career move and contemplating becoming a Comms Consultant or freelancer, I can help.

I’ve just launched How to be a Comms Consultant – Exploration as an Online Masterclass. I’ve been teaching this course face-to-face since 2018 and helped in-house Comms and PR pros think through whether it could be the right career move for them.

Launching All Things IC in 2013 was the best career move I’ve made. I love working as a trainer, consultant and mentor and helping internal communicators around the globe to thrive in their roles.

Now you can access this How to be a Comms Consultant – Exploration course wherever you are in the world and I can’t wait to work with you.

If the outcome of completing the Masterclass is you decide being a Consultant isn’t for you, that’s totally ok, I always say that at the start of my in-person sessions. It’s a personal choice and one that only you can make. The aim of this course is to guide you through the choices so you can draw your own conclusions and know what feels right for your career.

Topics I teach on this course are:

  • How to know if you’re ready to be a Consultant/freelancer
  • What would you offer?
  • Who would you work with?
  • Which company format would you choose?
  • What would you charge?
  • Your values
  • What would you do day-to-day?
  • Where would you work?
  • How would you get work?
  • What you’d need to think about for your brand.

Your investment

How to be a Comms Consultant – Exploration is available now for the launch price of £600 or £800 for the VIP version. The VIP course means we can work even closer together as you’ll submit assignments to me for personalised feedback.

Payments are processed securely via my Online Masterclasses website. However, if you need to pay via invoice, please contact my PA Louise and we’ll arrange that for you.

Based on my marvellous beta testers, we know it will take one or two days to complete the Online Masterclass if you go through it at an intensive pace. Or you could choose to do a chapter a week/month, it’s entirely up to you. If you do the VIP option, it will be longer as you’ll want to think through the assignments ahead of submitting them to me.

Once you invest in the course, you have 12 months to complete it, this means you can take your time and work through the content at your own pace.

Why does the course exist?

This is the course I wish existed back in 2012 when I only knew one Comms Consultant. I remember her coming to visit me while I was on maternity leave with my daughter, bringing sushi and letting me ask SO many questions while my four-month-old daughter lay cooing on her play mat. Thanks Kim!

This course would have saved me six months of researching. It’s an In-depth level Masterclass, which means it’s comprehensive, with 89 lessons to work through. There’s a rich variety of media in there, from text lessons to bespoke workbooks, videos, surveys and quizzes.

As a result of completing the Masterclass, you’ll know whether being a Comms Consultant/freelancer is for you. You’ll be able to know if it is “maybe one day” or if that is day one.

The curriculum follows my COMMS model: Clients, Organisation, Mechanics, Money and Strategy.

COMMS Model During the Masterclass we’ll work through the following topics together:

What’s it like to experience the Exploration Masterclass?

Adam Driver, of Authentic Comms Strategic Consultancy says: “I 100% recommend this if you’re considering being a communications freelancer/consultant. Last year I took Rachel’s How to be a Comms Consultant – Exploration course. It set me up for launching my own business and gave me the confidence I needed to bring Authentic Comms Strategic Consultancy to life. Thank you Rachel Miller – properly inspiring, especially with the blog writing and values side.”

This highly accessible, engaging and interactive course navigated me through the daunting waters of setting sail solo, covering off every important aspect with reassuring authority. Rachel’s friendly presenting style perfectly complements the challenging and thought-provoking subject matter. Highly recommended for anyone considering taking the next step forward in their communications career.”

Martin Flegg

Penelope Le Kelly of Pen Your Comms says: “The Exploration Masterclass was really useful to help me explore the possibility of becoming a consultant. Rachel is very open and honest about her experiences, making this Masterclass personal and friendly – there’s no judging in the room that’s for sure! I left the day feeling inspired for future potentials in my internal comms career.”
