Over the past few days the internet has been awash with the ‘What I do‘ meme. I looked for one which captured the role of Internal/Corporate Communicator and wasn’t able to find one, so I decided to create my own.
Below is my tongue in cheek representation of ‘What people think I do’ and how I think the profession is seen by others.
I made it in Powerpoint and created the ‘What I think I do’ image by running my blog through Wordle and creating a word cloud from the results.
I borrowed the magician idea from a PR Consultant one I found online as I think it’s often a view comms professionals have – in that we try to ‘create magic’ out of company information to surprise and delight our audience and deliver results.
What would you choose for yours?
Enjoy! Rachel

Good work Rachel, that is very funny, especially pulling rabbits out of a hat!
Thanks for commenting Jon, I’m glad you like it. Didn’t seem right not to have one for our profession!
I love it – we were discussing this in the office the other day – what would the IC one look like – this is perfect!
Hi Rachel looks fab and just about right especially the last picture
Ha, brilliant Rach, spot on! You’ve inspired me to think about one for communication consultants. You can check it out here – http://t.co/smZ0VUho
hahaha! it is brilliant! I am going to borrow it! 😉
Thank you for your comments, I’m delighted that other Comms pros identify with it too and think it’s accurate. Kim I think your Comms Consultant one is fab, well done. Geoff I’ve shared it with the Kingston tutors for them to consider including in future post-grad sessions as a discussion point around role of IC, Rachel.
You are on the mark, Rachel. This is my new go-to visual to explain my world!
Love it!!!
Thank you ladies, happy to hear you like it, Rachel
Hello !
That’s a nice one ! You can post it here : http://www.what-people-think-i-do.com !
This is so recognizable for Internal Communicators!
Great! I love it. Your pics summarize perfectly our job in IC, at least its perception by others.
Agree, except for one: my mum still think I work in the IT department, no matter how much I try to explain. (I guess that’s because she knows I write things on the intranet = computer = IT…)
